Fort Lauderdale, FL
Fort Lauderdale on Florida's Atlantic coast calls itself the
gateway to the Everglades. Close to Miami, this busy and
bustling city boasts miles of gorgeous white sand beaches,
upscale high-rises, a respected business district, great
shopping, and lots of dining experiences from casual
oceanfront to white cloth-fine dining.
The Everglades is probably the most impressive nearby
natural attraction. This state park that encompasses 10,000
islands is home to a huge variety of birds and insects and
wildlife. You can take excursions through the mangrove
swamps and see alligators and manatees and sometimes even dolphins.
You can rent your own kayak if you are daring and venture out on your own. The
Everglades are a truly spectacular and one-of-a-kind experience enjoyed by
hundreds of thousands of visitors every single year. This attraction is just a
stone’s throw from Fort Lauderdale.
Within Fort Lauderdale is Butterfly World, which features the largest butterfly
aviary in North America. At this attraction there is also an insectarium and a
hummingbird environment. The Flamingo Gardens and Wray Botanical
Collection feature 60 acres of landscape that includes native plants and trees, an
aviary with a bird of prey center, and an alligator viewing area. You can also see
flamingo, bobcats, and Florida panthers.
The Anne Kolb Nature Center in nearby Hollywood gives visitors an opportunity
to rent kayaks and explore narrow tunnels where mangrove trees grow up and
overhead to create a canopy.
For water sport lovers and beach goers there is the John U. Lloyd Beach State
Park in nearby Dania Beach. Here you can fish, canoe or rent water sport
equipment like jet skis. This area also has one of South Florida's most important
turtle nesting beaches.
The greater Fort Lauderdale area coastline has 69 miles of natural coral reef just
offshore. For snorkeling or scuba diving enthusiasts, this is a great place to go for
an afternoon or a day trip to enjoy all of the incredible underwater sites.
Fort Lauderdale also has a rich variety of cultural and entertainment experiences
to offer. There are theaters, museums, and concert venues throughout the city.
These offer events for patrons of all ages and tastes.
Locals as well as tourists who want to spend time shopping and hanging out at
the beach can do both. There are extensive shopping opportunities in Fort
Lauderdale--upscale shops, comfortable boutiques and even flea market-style
places.
There are also casinos and gaming places, sightseeing tours available, day spas,
and other natural attractions to take advantage of.
