Oviedo, FL

Oviedo is a town of about 35,000 people in Central Florida. Back in the 1870s, the settlers around Lake Jessup decided that they needed a post office. Andrew Aulin was one of these early settlers there and a shop owner. He decided to take the bull by horns and file paperwork to establish a post office. He wanted a unique name for the post office, and he liked the idea a Spanish name to go with the Spanish name of the state. He decided to name the post office location Oviedo after the city of Oviedo in northern Spain and the University of Oviedo. Oviedo today is a charming small town. Part of its charm comes from the chickens that are allowed to roam free through the downtown area. The chickens are a sort of icon of Oviedo and you can see representations of them on T-shirts, coffee mugs, and posters commemorating Oviedo’s yearly festivals. Sometimes there are so many chickens running around the area that traffic has to stop on the roads. No laws protect the chickens or call for their removal. They tend to be something that local residents tolerate and that some consider a unique and amusing feature of the town. The entire city of Oviedo is actually designated a bird sanctuary so the chickens are actually protected by this code. The chickens are also the subject of a film that was part of the Florida film Festival in 2009. It was a short documentary. Oviedo has a few notable people that call it home or, at least, who trace their roots back it. Blake Bartels was an NFL quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jennifer Beringer was a professional runner and Olympian who held an American record in the Steeplechase. Jeff Driscoll was a quarterback for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Stuart Fullerton is an entomologist who founded  the “Bug Closet” at the University of Central Florida. Oviedo has a number of homes that are on the historic register of buildings. The downtown area contains buildings that were built between the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, including the Nelson and Company Historic District, The RW Estes Celery Company Pre- cooler District, and the first Methodist Church of Oviedo. Today you can see murals of historic areas on the walls of the current Oviedo mall. Floor Busters is proud to serve the people and community of this town.
